The Liberal government is aiming to move fast on cutting red tape, stimulating infrastructure investment, and eliminating internal trade barriers.
Why It Matters
This is the most aggressive internal trade agenda in Canadian federal history.
The plan isn’t about studies — it’s about action. The Liberals are betting that quick implementation will boost national competitiveness and unity at a critical economic moment.
What the Carney Liberals Will Do
⚖️ 1. Legislate Federal Trade Barrier Removal
- Introduce legislation when Parliament resumes to eliminate all federal-level barriers to interprovincial trade and labour mobility.
- Repeal federal exceptions under the Canadian Free Trade Agreement.
- Goal: Achieve “national free trade” by Canada Day.
🧳 2. Unlock Labour Mobility
- Enforce mutual recognition of professional credentials across provinces — starting with health care, trucking, and financial services.
- Where recognition isn’t possible, the federal government will harmonize standards to close regulatory gaps.
✂️ 3. Cut Federal Red Tape
- All key departments (Transport, Natural Resources, Innovation) must conduct 60-day reviews of outdated or duplicative regulations.
- Each must report on changes to align with provincial rules and speed up decisions.
🛠️ 4. Fast-Track Economic Infrastructure
- Launch a list of “nation-building” infrastructure projects that cross provincial borders.
- Work with provinces and Indigenous partners to prioritize funding and speed up assessments.
- Focus: Projects that strengthen internal supply chains and drive long-term growth.
The Provincial Trade Report will continue to track progress on these pledges and highlight how provinces and the federal government are reshaping the internal trade landscape.
